A Guide to Japanese Rice Bowls: Chirashi, Donburi & More
Japanese rice bowls are a staple of Japanese cuisine, offering everything from fresh sashimi to comforting beef and crispy tempura, all served over rice.
But what’s the difference between chirashi, bara chirashi and donburi? And which should you order?
Here’s a quick guide to some popular Japanese rice bowls.
What Is Donburi?
Donburi, often shortened to don, refers to a Japanese rice bowl dish topped with ingredients such as meat, seafood, vegetables or tempura.
You’ll find many variations on Japanese menus, including gyudon (beef), tendon (tempura) and unagi don (grilled eel).
While donburi generally uses steamed rice, chirashi is traditionally made with seasoned sushi rice.
Chirashi vs Bara Chirashi
Both feature seafood served over sushi rice, but the difference lies mainly in how the ingredients are prepared.
Chirashi typically features slices of sashimi arranged over rice, allowing you to enjoy the individual flavours and textures of different fish.
Bara chirashi uses smaller, diced pieces of seafood mixed with colourful toppings, giving you a little of everything in each mouthful.
At Hana Japanese Restaurant, our Bara Chirashi and Premium Kaisen Bara Chirashi bring together a generous assortment of seafood, making them popular choices for sashimi lovers.

From Fresh Seafood to Japanese Comfort Food
While chirashi and bara chirashi are great choices for sashimi lovers, Japanese rice bowls go well beyond raw seafood.
At Hana, our menu also includes hearty, cooked favourites such as Gyudon, Tendon and Unagi Rice Bowl, each offering something quite different.
Gyudon: Japanese Beef Rice Bowl
For something warm and comforting, there’s Gyudon.
Thinly sliced beef is simmered in a savoury-sweet sauce and served over steamed rice.
Our Gyudon at Hana is a satisfying choice for lunch or dinner, especially when you’re craving something hearty and
uncomplicated.

Tendon: Tempura Rice Bowl
If you prefer something crispy, there’s Tendon.
Featuring golden Japanese tempura served over rice, Tendon brings together the crunch of freshly fried ingredients with a savoury-sweet sauce.
It’s one of the cooked rice bowl options at Hana for those who enjoy tempura.

Unagi Don: Grilled Eel Rice Bowl
For something richer, there’s Unagi Don.
Grilled freshwater eel is glazed with a sweet-savoury sauce, giving it a tender texture and distinctive caramelised flavour.
At Hana, our Unagi Rice Bowl is a generous serving of grilled eel over rice, making it a particularly satisfying choice for unagi lovers.
